Decker agreed to sign a contract in 2009 with Island/Def Jam after Mercury Records President David Massey passed her demos to L.A. Reid, head of Island/Def Jam. On August 9, 2009 she launched her self-titled debut album under the name Jessie James. Jessie James achieved a reasonable amount of popularity and had Wanted making it to at the Top 40 charts. Decker is always an "country" musician, however this album was made and sold to a mass market. Decker, who had been disappointed by two further singles that were released from the album, fought with the top executives of the record label in search of greater influence. Decker then released her second single Boys in the Summer which is more country. Decker launched her sophomore album under two names: Sweet American Dreams or Daughter of a Gypsy. Mercury shelved it after the first three singles fell in the country charts. Decker then was let out of the contract.
